Why Google Ads Waste Budget and How to Fix It
A common story: a small business starts Google Ads, spends a few hundred euros a month and gets a handful of calls, many of them irrelevant. The conclusion is often "ads do not work here." In most cases the ads work fine; the account is simply paying for clicks that never had a chance to become customers. Before you raise the budget, check these seven places where money usually leaks.
1. Broad keywords that attract the wrong searches
If you sell kitchen renovation in Tallinn and your ads appear for "kitchen design ideas" or "DIY kitchen," you pay for people who want inspiration, not a contractor. Prefer specific phrases that show intent: the service, the place and words like "price," "quote" or "company." Start narrow, see which searches bring real enquiries and widen only from there.
2. No negative keywords
Negative keywords tell Google which searches you do not want. Open the search terms report every week during the first month and look at the actual queries that triggered your ads. Add anything irrelevant as a negative keyword. Typical candidates:
- "free," "jobs," "course," "diy," "template"
- Services you do not offer, or brands you do not work with
- Cities and regions you do not serve
This single habit often removes a large share of wasted clicks without touching the rest of the account.
3. Sending every click to the homepage
A homepage tries to speak to everyone, so it convinces nobody in particular. An ad about emergency boiler repair should land on a page about exactly that, with the price, the area you cover and a phone number visible without scrolling. Matching the ad to the page is one of the cheapest ways to get more enquiries from the same traffic. Not sure whether you need a dedicated page? Read when a landing page beats a full website.
4. A page that does not convert on a phone
Most local searches happen on mobile. If the page loads slowly, the button is hard to tap or the form asks for ten fields, visitors leave and you still pay for the click. Test your own landing page on a phone with a mobile connection. Our website conversion checklist lists what to look at first.
5. Wrong location and schedule settings
Check where your ads show. The default setting can include people who are merely "interested in" your area, not located in it. Set the location to people in or regularly in your service area. Then look at the day and hour report: if you cannot answer the phone at night, an ad that invites a call at 2 a.m. only wastes money. Show call-focused ads when someone is able to pick up.
6. Not measuring real enquiries
Clicks and impressions say little. What matters is how many calls, form submissions and messages the ads produce, and what each costs. If conversions are not tracked, Google cannot optimise towards them and you cannot tell which keywords actually work. Set up call, form and chat tracking first; our guide to tracking where your leads come from shows how.
7. Slow follow-up on the leads you do get
An enquiry that waits a day for an answer is often gone to a competitor. Paying for a click and then replying too late is the most avoidable loss of all. Decide who answers, how fast, and what happens outside working hours. An automatic first reply can confirm the message and keep the lead warm until a person is free.
A simple weekly routine
- Read the search terms report and add negative keywords
- Check cost per enquiry, not per click, for each campaign
- Pause keywords that spend money without producing enquiries
- Review location, device and hour reports once a month
- Call your own number and send your own form to test the response
None of this guarantees a particular result, because competition, season and price all matter. But an account that is tight on keywords, tracked properly and sending visitors to a matching page spends the same money far more sensibly.
